U.S. investigates Waaree Energies over suspected false labeling of solar panels to evade tariffs.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has launched an investigation into India’s Waaree Energies over allegations it may have evaded U.S. tariffs on Chinese solar products by falsely labeling imports as made in India. The probe, prompted by a trade group including Qcells and First Solar, stems from concerns that Waaree imported panels with Chinese components without paying required antidumping and countervailing duties. Officials say there is reasonable suspicion of mislabeling, leading to a requirement for cash deposits on shipments. The move follows a surge in solar imports from India after U.S. tariffs were imposed on Southeast Asian suppliers. The trade group supports the investigation and is pushing for tariffs to be extended to imports from India, Indonesia, and Laos. Waaree has not publicly commented.
