Thailand buys Airbus A330 MRTT+ for $372M to gain aerial refueling and boost air force modernization.

Thailand has become the launch customer for Airbus’s new A330 MRTT+ variant, ordering a single aircraft based on the A330-800neo with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. The plane, set for military conversion in Spain in 2026 and delivery in 2029, will provide aerial refueling, transport, and medical evacuation capabilities, supporting Thailand’s F-16s and Gripen fighters. It features both boom and hose-and-drogue systems, a VVIP cabin, and enhanced efficiency. The deal, valued at about USD372 million, includes plans for domestic maintenance through a partnership with Thai Aviation Industries, supporting local industry and long-term sustainment. The acquisition marks Thailand’s first air-to-air refueling capability and part of a broader air force modernization effort amid regional security concerns.
