A 41-year-old South Bend man, Erick Hordos, has been charged in connection with a gunfire incident near Indiana University South Bend that triggered a shelter-in-place order.
Police were called to a residential area after reports of a domestic disturbance and gunfire, during which Hordos allegedly fired a shotgun into the ground near his girlfriend before fleeing in her vehicle.
The car crashed nearby, and witnesses reported seeing Hordos exit and fire additional shots before fleeing on foot.
A manhunt ensued, prompting campus safety measures.
Hordos turned himself in the next day, claiming he intended to commit suicide and had fired the weapon to prevent himself from doing so.
He faces charges including intimidation, criminal recklessness, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The shotgun was recovered from the woods.
Hordos is held without bond and is scheduled for his first court appearance on September 25, 2025.
