A rare orange lobster, rescued from a NY supermarket, was released into Long Island Sound after a customer saved it from being eaten.
A rare orange lobster, named Jean-Clawd Van Dam, was rescued from a Tops supermarket tank in Henrietta, New York, after customer Kyle Brancato bought it to prevent it from being eaten. Noting its unusual color may have led staff to assume it was unhealthy, Brancato created a temporary saltwater habitat and contacted Humane Long Island, which took custody and released the genetically unique lobster into Long Island Sound. The vivid orange hue, caused by a rare mutation, occurs in about one in 30 million lobsters. The release marked a rare conservation effort highlighting public awareness and collaboration in protecting unusual wildlife.
