Oxford’s first building named for an Indian, the Ratan Tata Building, breaks ground on September 23, 2025, honoring philanthropist Ratan Tata and boosting India-Oxford ties.
A groundbreaking ceremony on September 23, 2025, marked the start of construction for the Ratan Tata Building at Oxford’s Somerville College, the first Oxford facility named after an Indian.
The four-storey structure, designed by Morris & Co, will house the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development and reflect values of sustainability, inclusion, and innovation.
Funded by a major donation from the Tata Group, the building honors late Indian philanthropist Ratan Tata, who died in October 2024.
It completes the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter campus and strengthens Oxford’s academic ties with India.
