Minnesota’s Stillwater prison, nearing half capacity, is closing by 2029 due to aging infrastructure, with inmates transferred statewide.
Minnesota’s Stillwater prison is nearing half capacity with 487 inmates as of September 25, 2025, and will cap at 553 by October 1, as part of a planned closure by 2029 due to aging infrastructure and high maintenance costs.
The closure, announced in a May 15 budget deal between Governor Tim Walz and lawmakers, follows the transfer of 2,017 inmates since June 16, with most moved to facilities across the state based on medical, mental health, and treatment needs.
The state’s overall incarcerated population remains stable.
Concerns have been raised by some lawmakers over transparency and public safety, with calls for a public hearing.
Meanwhile, 49 inmates are temporarily housed at Washington County Jail due to a fire suppression project at St.
Cloud, expected to end by late October.
