Istanbul's opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, charged in a politically driven case, denounced the trial as biased and vowed resistance.
Istanbul’s jailed opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a top challenger to President Erdogan, appeared in court on Friday, calling charges against him politically motivated and asserting he is “not afraid.” Speaking from Silivri prison, he dismissed the case—related to comments about a court-appointed expert—as part of a broader campaign to silence dissent and dismantle his CHP party.
Imamoglu criticized the appointment of a single expert witness in 24 separate cases involving CHP municipalities, calling the pattern “zero” odds and a sign of systemic bias.
He accused the government of controlling the judiciary and conducting arbitrary detentions, while supporters cheered him with chants of “President Imamoglu.” The next hearing is set for December 12.
