Indian court eases bail rules for MLA Abbas Ansari, allowing travel and speech on non-case topics.
The Indian Supreme Court has eased interim bail conditions for MLA Abbas Ansari in a Uttar Pradesh Gangsters Act case, allowing him to travel outside the state and change his residence in Lucknow, provided he informs the trial court and police of his plans.
The court, led by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, clarified that Ansari can speak on general social and economic issues but must not comment on the ongoing case to prevent social media backlash that could harm judicial proceedings.
The decision follows a plea by advocate Kapil Sibal, who sought broader speech relaxations.
Ansari, arrested in September 2024 over allegations of extortion and assault, was granted interim bail in March 2025 and has had conditions gradually relaxed since then.
The court emphasized its intent to protect judicial integrity, not suppress free speech.
