I-5 northbound closes Friday night to Sunday morning for repairs, affecting multiple on-ramps and requiring alternate routes.

Beginning Friday at 9 p.m. and lasting through Monday at 5 a.m., all northbound lanes of I-5 in San Diego from I-8 to Mission Bay Drive will close for roadwork and culvert replacement, according to Caltrans. The project, part of a $1.6 billion infrastructure effort, aims to improve safety, extend the freeway’s lifespan, and enhance environmental performance. Key on-ramps, including Moore Street in Old Town and others at Camino Del Rio West, Sea World Drive-Tecolote Road, and Clairemont Drive, will also shut, while the Mission Bay Drive on-ramp remains open. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes like SR-163, SR-15, and I-805 and allow extra travel time. Construction may cause noise and lighting near Damon Avenue, affecting nearby businesses.
