A Guyana election official was jailed after allegedly stealing $5M meant for polling workers.

A 30-year-old assistant accountant at Guyana’s Elections Commission, Dikimbie Gittens, was remanded in custody after being charged with stealing over $5 million from the GECOM Secretariat in Georgetown between September 15 and 16, 2025. The funds, intended for polling day workers, were reportedly stolen during a critical period following the September 1 elections, causing delays in payments and leaving some workers underpaid or unpaid. Gittens, arrested on September 22, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, where the charge of larceny by a clerk or servant was read, and bail was denied. The case was adjourned to October 15, 2025, amid growing concerns about financial oversight within the electoral body. Police recovered a portion of the stolen funds from Gittens’ possession.
