The Grand Canyon’s North Rim partially reopens October 1 for daytime visits after the Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed structures and burned over 227 square miles.
Portions of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim will reopen on October 1 for daytime visits to areas like Point Imperial and Cape Royal, following the Dragon Bravo Fire sparked by lightning in early July.
The blaze burned over 227 square miles, destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge and cabins, and prompted evacuations.
While the park service says the reopening is safe, visitors must bring their own food, water, and supplies, as there will be no power, running water, or cell service.
Most of the North Rim, including trails, remains closed indefinitely due to hazards like dead trees and flash floods.
Access will continue through November 30, though earlier closures may occur due to snow.
The fire’s rapid spread, fueled by unexpected wind shifts, has drawn criticism from Arizona’s elected officials, who are calling for an independent review of the response.
