Germany warns Russia and China are tracking and threatening its military satellites, prompting a €35 billion space defense boost.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warned on September 25, 2025, that Russia is tracking two Intelsat satellites used by German military forces, with two Russian Luch-Olymp satellites currently monitoring them.
He cited growing threats from Russia and China, including capabilities to jam, disable, or destroy satellites, and noted that Germany has already experienced jamming attacks.
Pistorius emphasized that 39 Chinese and Russian surveillance satellites were overhead in real time, prompting a €35 billion investment over five years to strengthen Germany’s space capabilities, reduce reliance on U.S. systems, and enhance national and European space security.
