Former South Carolina sheriff Chuck Wright pleads guilty to fraud and theft, including diverting $28K from a chaplain’s fund.
Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges including wire fraud conspiracy, misusing controlled substances, and stealing from a federally funded chaplain’s fund.
Along with former chaplain Amos Durham and employee Lawson Watson, Wright is accused of diverting over $28,000 from the benevolence fund for personal use, including paying for prescription painkillers and a personal trip to Washington, D.C. Durham allegedly provided Wright with a blank check to buy drugs, while Watson received more than $200,000 in pay for work not performed.
All three men entered plea agreements, with Wright facing fines, restitution of at least $440,000, and potential prison time.
The case, which emerged after a newspaper investigation into excessive spending and misuse of county resources, including a helicopter and credit card, has drawn criticism from local officials.
Wright, who served over 20 years, resigned in May 2025.
