A former Devils Lake officer was charged with reckless endangerment after firing a gun during a six-hour standoff, injuring himself and endangering others, including three children.

A former Devils Lake police officer, Rey Hennen, 37, was charged with reckless endangerment after a six-hour standoff at his home on September 8, 2025. Authorities responded to a 911 hang-up call linked to a sexual assault allegation and arrived to serve a search warrant. During the incident, Hennen, who was holding his 11-month-old child, fired a gun, injuring himself and sending a bullet through a garage door toward nearby homes. Three other children were present. He was later arrested, initially charged with terrorizing, and recharged on September 25 with reckless endangerment involving a firearm. Hennen, who was fired from the police department, remains in custody. No injuries were reported among officers or bystanders.
