Peter Lewis, a former cartoonist, completed a decade-long mechanical fish tank inspired by a dead aquarium, creating a steampunk-style model where a roof-mounted train powers submarine-like fish below.
Despite setbacks including a storm that destroyed his studio, the intricate piece now anchors the Newcastle Museum’s "Model Newcastle" exhibit, opening September 27.
The display features community-contributed miniatures like trains, ships, and a dystopian cityscape, highlighting how small creations can reflect larger stories.
Lewis called the process stressful but expressed gratitude for support, while museum director Julie Baird emphasized the exhibit’s mission to connect visitors with their own histories through miniature worlds.
