The penalty followed a consumer complaint that FirstCry advertised products as “MRP inclusive of all taxes” but added GST at checkout, creating a false impression of deeper discounts.
An investigation found that advertised 27% discounts were effectively only 18.2% after GST, violating the Consumer Protection Act and e-commerce rules.
The CCPA ruled this “drip pricing” a dark pattern that misled consumers, rejecting disclaimers like “additional charges may apply.” The company must now display total prices inclusive of all taxes and clearly show extra fees.
