A 2018 federal backup camera rule linked to 78% drop in child backover deaths, study finds.
A 2018 federal mandate requiring backup cameras in new vehicles is linked to a 78% drop in child fatalities and significant reductions in injuries and accidents involving children under five, according to a study presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics’ annual meeting.
Researchers analyzed data from 2011 to 2024, finding a sharp decline in backover incidents after the rule took effect, with 53 cases before the mandate and just 18 after.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates thousands of injuries and about 210 deaths annually from such crashes, mostly involving young children.
While the findings are preliminary and await peer review, experts say the rule has been highly effective and urge drivers of older vehicles to consider installing backup cameras, possibly through government incentives.
