A family from Cookson, Oklahoma, discovered a 2.79-carat brown diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas on September 13, 2025, while celebrating a nephew’s birthday.
Using digging tools and sifters bought at a dollar store, they found the shiny, oblong stone near the Prospector Trailhead.
Park officials confirmed it was a genuine diamond formed by structural defects during its underground creation.
Named the William Diamond in honor of the birthday boy, it is the third-largest found at the park in 2025 among 403 registered diamonds this year.
The park, the only place in the world where the public can search for and keep diamonds in their original volcanic source, remains a popular destination for amateur prospectors.
