Australia reenacted its first railway journey, marking 170 years of rail with vintage and modern trains running the original route.
Australia’s iconic NSW railway marked its 170th anniversary with a reenactment of the 1855 Sydney to Parramatta journey, featuring three trains—two vintage steam locomotives and a modern intercity train—running side-by-side along the original 22-kilometre route at the same time and date.
Stops included Newtown, Ashfield, Burwood, and Homebush, mirroring the historic trip that took about 50 minutes and cost two to four shillings depending on class.
The event highlighted the shift from horse-drawn transport to steam and modern rail, with Transport Heritage CEO Andrew Moritz calling it a celebration of progress and heritage.
Public heritage experiences, including vintage bus and tram rides, will be available at Sydney’s Central Station during the October long weekend.
