Australia fines Anthony Rotondo $343,500 for non-consensual deepfake porn of women, first civil case under Online Safety Act.
Anthony Rotondo has been fined $343,500 plus legal costs by Australia’s Federal Court for creating and distributing non-consensual deepfake pornographic images of prominent women, marking the first civil case under the Online Safety Act.
The court found he violated the law 14 times between November 2022 and October 2023 by posting manipulated images on MrDeepFakes.com.
The eSafety Commissioner led the action, which sought to protect victims’ privacy and address the psychological harm caused by such abuse.
Rotondo had previously been fined $25,000 for contempt after breaching court orders, including sharing court documents with media and 49 others.
He later cooperated by providing website access, enabling content removal.
The case highlights Australia’s growing legal response to deepfake abuse, including warnings to foreign tech companies enabling such content, and urges victims to report incidents through eSafety.gov.au for support and removal assistance.
