A 13-year-old girl’s death in Malaysia prompts a closed inquest to protect child witnesses, with media barred until all testimony concludes.
The Kota Kinabalu Coroner’s Court has kept media out of the inquest into 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir’s death, citing the need to protect child witnesses under the Child Witness Evidence Act 2017.
The inquest, ongoing since September 3, has seen 11 witnesses testify, including three children, with 25 adults and 32 more minors expected.
Zara died on July 17 after being found unconscious near her school dormitory in Papar; her body was exhumed for a second autopsy.
The Attorney General’s Chambers ordered the inquest after reviewing the police investigation.
Media access remains restricted until all child testimony concludes, with full case details to be released afterward.
