UW system proposes uniform transfer policy for general education credits, effective fall 2026.
The Universities of Wisconsin are proposing a policy to guarantee that all core general education credits—30 to 36 hours across six areas—transfer seamlessly between the system’s 13 campuses, standardizing requirements and improving transparency.
Developed in response to the 2025–27 state budget, the policy aims to reduce time and cost for students transferring between UW schools or from technical colleges, and ensures dual enrollment credits from high school are treated equally.
If approved by the Board of Regents, it will take effect for students enrolling in fall 2026, supporting student success by removing barriers to degree completion.
