Supreme Court asks India to respond to challenge over duty-free yellow pea imports harming farmers.
The Supreme Court has sought the Indian government's response to a Public Interest Litigation challenging the duty-free import of yellow peas, with farmers' group Kisan Mahapanchayat alleging the policy harms domestic pulse producers by driving prices below the Minimum Support Price.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan argued that cheap imports undercut farmers growing tur dal, moong dal, and urad dal, despite government expert bodies and NITI Aayog recommending import restrictions and higher domestic production.
The court expressed concern over balancing farmer welfare with food security and market stability, questioning the safety of yellow peas for human consumption and noting their use as animal feed in some countries.
The government has been directed to respond.
