A stolen 17th-century Mexican map was returned to Mexico in 2025 after being found in New Mexico.
A centuries-old map depicting the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and indigenous communities in present-day Mexico and the Southwest was returned to Mexico on September 23, 2025, after being recovered in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Stolen from Mexico’s national archives in 2011, the document was identified in 2016 by a librarian at the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library, leading to an FBI investigation that confirmed its authenticity using historical records.
The map, oriented with north to the right, was preserved in a climate-controlled environment during legal proceedings.
