Singapore orders Meta to use facial recognition and prioritize local reports by Sept. 30, 2025, to fight government impersonation scams.
Singapore has issued Meta, owner of Facebook, a first-of-its-kind directive under the Online Criminal Harms Act, requiring the company to implement facial recognition and prioritize user reports from Singapore by September 30, 2025, to combat scams impersonating government officials.
Failure to comply could result in fines up to S$1 million and S$100,000 per day for ongoing violations.
The move follows a sharp rise in impersonation scams, with nearly 1,762 cases reported in early 2025 and victims losing $126.5 million.
Authorities say Facebook remains the top platform used for such fraud, including deepfakes promoting fake services or cryptocurrency schemes.
While Meta claims to use automated systems to detect impersonation, Singapore’s government says more local action is needed and may extend similar rules to other platforms.
