A scabies outbreak at Kilkenny Care Centre in 2024–2025 revealed serious infection control failures, prompting urgent safety improvements.
An inspection by Ireland's HIQA found Kilkenny Care Centre had a poorly coordinated response to a scabies outbreak that began in September 2024, with only one outbreak meeting held despite public health declaring it in May 2025.
The outbreak, including a confirmed case of crusted scabies, involved multiple residents and staff, with inadequate isolation, inconsistent treatments, delayed laundry, and insufficient cleaning.
The facility, which had 88 residents, faced concerns over infection control and prior safeguarding issues.
While 22 of 50 inspected care centers were fully or substantially compliant, many fell short in staffing, training, and governance.
The provider submitted a compliance plan, and HIQA urged urgent improvements to prevent further spread.
