Qantas began operating its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft on September 25, 2025, launching the first commercial flights on domestic routes between Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.
As the first airline in the Asia Pacific region to fly the A321XLR, Qantas is modernizing its fleet under Project Winton, replacing older Boeing 737s with aircraft offering wider seats, larger windows, faster Wi-Fi, 60% more overhead storage, and reduced cabin noise.
The A321XLR, capable of flying up to 8,700 km, provides greater range and fuel efficiency, enabling potential new short-haul international routes.
The airline has ordered 48 of the aircraft, with seven delivered by year-end and more expected by mid-2026.
The rollout includes enhanced passenger comfort, including more legroom in business class and improved economy seating, along with lower emissions per seat.
