A proposed NSW park aims to protect 476,000 hectares for koalas, pending federal approval for carbon credits.
A proposed national park in New South Wales aims to protect koalas and their habitat by preserving 476,000 hectares of land, including 176,000 hectares set aside under a logging moratorium, but its official boundaries depend on federal approval to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU).
Though over 2,300 ACCU projects are already registered nationwide, the park remains unapproved, with a decision expected after the Emission Reduction Assurance Committee reviews a draft methodology.
The initiative has inspired similar conservation efforts, including a federally funded habitat restoration project in Queensland’s Toowoomba region.
The NSW government plans to finalize the decision before its term ends in March 2027.
