A 38-year-old Wānaka woman, Sepiuta Vave, faces fraud and unlawful sexual connection charges after allegedly defrauding over a dozen people of more than $1 million by falsely claiming cancer treatment was needed.
Her husband, Andrew Jones, 28, was also charged in connection with the scheme, which investigators say funded a lavish lifestyle including luxury vehicles and rental properties.
Both pleaded not guilty and remain in custody.
The original fraud charges stem from false medical claims dating back to 2021, with evidence suggesting additional victims may exist.
Police are seizing assets and investigating financial records to identify more victims and support restitution.
The case is set for trial in September 2026.
