New Zealand bans vehicles on Cape Palliser Road for two years to protect cultural and environmental sites.
A scenic coastal stretch of the Cape Palliser Paper Road in New Zealand’s South Wairarapa will ban all motor vehicles for at least two years, allowing only pedestrians, bicycles, and e-bikes.
The South Wairarapa District Council revised its initial proposal after concerns over enforceability and widespread public opposition, with over 3,500 submissions.
The change aims to protect environmentally and culturally sensitive land, including Māori and Crown land with ancestral sites, from damage caused by four-wheel drives, quad bikes, and illegal camping.
Local landowners and authorized personnel may still use vehicles.
The council will survey and mark the route, clarify that camping is not permitted at Stonewall Scenic Reserve, and form a stakeholder group to explore future access.
The final bylaw is set for approval on October 8.
