New Zealand allocates $2.07B to fix highways and Tauranga launches $9M road repairs using new materials and notifications.
New Zealand is investing $2.07 billion in state highway maintenance, resurfacing over 2,100 lane kilometers and rebuilding roads in regions like Taranaki and Southland to reduce potholes and improve safety.
Meanwhile, Tauranga City Council is launching its annual $9 million road resurfacing program, using 20,000 tonnes of asphalt and chip seal on 7.8km and 20km of roads respectively, covering 4–5% of its network.
The work, partly funded by the national government, includes trials of new materials and aims to prevent damage before it occurs.
Residents are notified via letters and QR codes, with updates shared through signage and a weekly e-newsletter.
Chip seal, though initially leaving loose chips, helps protect road foundations and is used to balance cost and durability, especially on lower-traffic roads.
