Minnesota commuted Brian Pippitt’s life sentence after a review found serious doubts about his guilt in a 1998 murder.
The Minnesota Board of Pardons commuted Brian Pippitt’s life sentence on September 24, 2025, after he served over 26 years for the 1998 murder of 84-year-old storekeeper Evelyn Malin.
The decision followed a recommendation from the state’s Conviction Review Unit, which found insurmountable reasonable doubt about his guilt after a two-year investigation.
The unit’s 118-page report cited significant flaws in the original case, including unreliable evidence and flawed testimony.
While Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison supported the commutation, citing justice and the need to correct errors, one board member opposed it due to unresolved questions.
Pippitt, now 63, will be released and continues to seek formal exoneration.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to reform Minnesota’s justice system through post-conviction reviews.
