Iwata City launches Japan’s first pilot project using AI and satellite tech to link road and water infrastructure monitoring, aiming to prevent sinkholes and improve maintenance.
Tenchijin and AISIN have launched Japan’s first pilot project in Iwata City, running from September 2025 to February 2026, to integrate road and water infrastructure management.
Using Tenchijin’s KnoWaterleak platform—leveraging satellite data and AI to assess underground water pipe leak risks—and AISIN’s Michi-log system, which detects road surface issues via AI-powered in-vehicle cameras, the project collects real-time data from two city patrol vehicles and one taxi.
The combined data helps identify links between road damage and underground pipe deterioration, improving early detection of sinkholes and subsidence.
The initiative aims to enhance coordination among local government departments, boost maintenance efficiency, and establish a model for nationwide and international replication.
Iwata City provides administrative support and data access, while the technology has previously been recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
