Iowa woman extradited in 1992 newborn murder case solved by modern DNA testing.
A 58-year-old Iowa woman, Cindy Sue Elder, has been extradited from Missouri to face first-degree murder charges in the 1992 death of her newborn son, found in an Iowa City landfill.
Authorities say she concealed her pregnancy, gave birth in a basement, and discarded the live infant in a plastic bag near her father’s home.
The case, unsolved for decades due to limited DNA technology, was reopened in 2020, and updated testing confirmed Elder’s identity as the mother with 99.99% certainty.
She was arrested in September 2025 and is now held in Johnson County Jail.
The baby’s father was unaware of the pregnancy.
The case is being prosecuted by state and county offices, highlighting advances in forensic science and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
