Danny Topia, a Thames-Coromandel candidate, died before voting, so his name stays on ballots but votes won’t count.
Thames-Coromandel District Council candidate Danny Topia has died, just before he was set to speak at a "Meet the Candidates" event.
He was running for the Coromandel-Colville Community Board, and though his name remains on distributed voting materials, votes for him will not be counted.
The council extended condolences to his family and supporters.
Voting in the local body election continues until October 11.
In a separate case, no election will be held for the Waikato Regional Council’s Ngā Hau e Whā Māori constituency after candidate Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai passed away in August; her opponent, Tipa Mahuta, has been elected unopposed, with voting materials no longer valid due to timing.
