Dakota Van Patten, accused in Melody Hoffman’s 2024 murder and kidnapping, awaits trial verdict after evidence linked him to the crime.
The Linn County trial of 19-year-old Dakota Van Patten, accused in the 2024 murder and kidnapping of 20-year-old Melody Hoffman, concluded with both sides resting their cases.
Hoffman’s body was found at Lily Lake in Amana, and evidence presented included Van Patten’s DNA on items linked to the crime, cellphone data showing his hotspot was active during her disappearance, and surveillance footage of him and co-defendant McKinley Louisma buying machetes and gloves.
Van Patten, who denied involvement in a recorded interview and did not testify, claimed he thought the weapons were toys and did not know Louisma’s name.
Prosecutors allege he was involved in the crime alongside Louisma, who is already serving life in prison, and Logan Kimpton, charged in connection with the conspiracy.
The autopsy revealed Hoffman may have been pregnant or recently miscarried.
Closing arguments were held, and the jury is set to deliberate.
If convicted, Van Patten faces a mandatory life sentence.
