China and Joyson Electronics unveil EV battery ejection system to boost safety during thermal runaway.
A Chinese research center and Joyson Electronics have developed a system that ejects an EV’s high-voltage battery within one second of detecting thermal runaway, using a gas generator similar to an airbag to launch it 3 to 6 meters away, as demonstrated on a Chery iCar 03.
The goal is to protect occupants by removing the fire source, with the battery contained in a safety pit.
While thermal runaway can reach 1,000°C and is hard to stop, the ejection raises safety concerns due to the battery’s weight and potential harm to pedestrians or nearby vehicles.
Critics question its practicality, noting risks from damaged or swollen batteries and the danger of projectiles.
No production plans or availability details have been released.
