India’s CBI investigates alleged FCRA violations by Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk and his groups over foreign funding, amid his hunger strike and protests.
The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing alleged Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act violations involving Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk and his organizations, including the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL) and SECMOL, following a reference from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The inquiry, ongoing for several weeks, examines financial records from 2022 to 2024, focusing on claims of unregistered foreign funds and undeclared bank accounts.
Wangchuk denies reliance on foreign funding, stating revenue comes from knowledge-based exports with international entities, which he says were taxed and not subject to FCRA.
He has been summoned but has not responded, and the probe continues amid ongoing political tensions.
A hunger strike he began on September 10, demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion for Ladakh, coincided with violent protests in Leh, where government buildings were attacked, prompting security forces to intervene.
No FIR has been filed.
