Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD outsold Tesla in the European Union for the second straight month in August 2025, with sales surging 201.3% year-on-year and capturing 1.3% of the market, while Tesla’s EU sales fell 36.6% to 1.2% share. The broader European car market grew 4.7%, driven by strong demand for plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles, which together made up 62.2% of registrations—up from 52.8% a year earlier. Stellantis, Volkswagen, and Renault reported sales gains, with Stellantis posting its first monthly increase in over a year. Chinese automakers, including SAIC Motor’s MG brand, expanded rapidly, leveraging plug-in hybrids to meet emissions rules and appeal to cost-conscious buyers amid rising global competition and regulatory pressures.
