A burst water main flooded London’s Westminster Court, forcing evacuations and disrupting major legal cases.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London closed on Thursday due to a burst 9cm water main on Enford Street in Marylebone, causing flooding across a 200m by 100m area and cutting off water to the building, posing a public health risk.
Around 14 residents from basement and ground-floor flats were evacuated, and eight fire engines with about 60 firefighters responded, while traffic was restricted on nearby roads.
The closure disrupted high-profile legal proceedings, including cases involving terrorism and extradition, and affected scheduled appearances such as that of Hashem Abedi, linked to the Manchester Arena bomb plot.
Court staff and legal professionals waited outside as emergency crews worked to resolve the situation, with authorities urging the public to avoid the area.
