Australian woman sentenced to six years in Japan for drug trafficking after unknowingly carrying meth in suitcase.
Perth grandmother Donna Nelson, 59, has lost her appeal against a six-year prison sentence in Japan for drug trafficking after methamphetamine was found in a suitcase she carried into Narita Airport in January 2023.
She claimed she was deceived by an online romantic partner, known as "Kelly," who allegedly tricked her into transporting the bag from Laos, saying it contained clothing samples.
Though the court acknowledged she was likely a victim of a scam and called her a "blind mule," it upheld the conviction, stating she had doubts about the suitcase but still proceeded.
Her family plans to seek a transfer to an Australian prison, and Nelson has 14 days to appeal to Japan’s Supreme Court.
The case highlights risks of international romance scams and unwitting drug trafficking.
