Job vacancies in Australia fell 2.7% to 327,200 in the three months ending August 2025, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, marking a cooling labor market.
The decline was driven by a 3.4% drop in private sector openings, while public sector vacancies rose 2.2% for the fourth straight quarter.
The unemployment-to-vacancy ratio increased to 2.0, the highest since February 2021.
Vacancies declined across 11 industries, with finance, construction, and mining seeing sharp drops, while retail and wholesale posted gains.
Year-over-year, vacancies fell 1.5%, a much smaller drop than the previous year’s 16.9%.
Despite the recent decline, vacancies remain 44% above pre-pandemic levels.
