11 ancient rings and medallions found in a BC thrift store will be studied and exhibited at Simon Fraser University starting in 2026.
In 2024, 11 rings and two medallions possibly from the medieval or Roman era were found in a British Columbia thrift store and donated to Simon Fraser University’s museum.
Identified by a patron claiming to be an archaeologist, the artifacts were accepted after a year-long review despite lacking provenance, due to concerns they might otherwise be lost to private markets.
Though their true age and authenticity remain uncertain, the collection will be preserved and used in a new undergraduate course beginning in 2026, focusing on archaeological analysis, ethics, and artifact stewardship.
The course will culminate in a public exhibition exploring the items’ potential history and the broader issues of looting, ownership, and cultural preservation.
