The U.S. State Department has designated Barrio 18, a transnational gang originating from Salvadoran immigrants in Los Angeles, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the move on September 23, 2025, citing the gang’s violent activities in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, including attacks on security forces and civilians.
The designation, which also adds Barrio 18 to the Specially Designated Global Terrorist list, enables sanctions and financial restrictions.
It follows a 2024 federal case in New York where members pleaded guilty to racketeering and murder charges.
The action is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to combat criminal networks, including other groups like MS-13 and Mexican cartels.
While the move strengthens U.S. law enforcement tools, its practical impact remains uncertain, especially as the gang’s primary activities focus on drug trafficking and extortion rather than political objectives.
