UK parents earning over £60K can now pay the Child Benefit charge via payroll, avoiding self-assessment.
A new HMRC rule effective September 23, 2025, allows higher-earning parents in the UK who receive Child Benefit and earn over £60,000 annually to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge through their payroll via PAYE, eliminating the need for a self-assessment tax return if they are employed and not required to file for other income sources.
The change, available to tens of thousands of families, simplifies the process by automatically deducting the charge from pay after opting in via Gov.uk or HMRC by January 31, 2026, for the 2024/25 tax year.
Child Benefit, paid weekly to support children under 16 or under 20 in approved education, also provides National Insurance credits that help build State Pension entitlement and grants a National Insurance number to children before age 16.
The reform aims to reduce administrative burden and improve access to benefits.
