A UK man falsely claimed a £3.5M crypto stash to avoid prison for stealing £2M, court rules.
Timothy Barnes, 67, from Droitwich, has been remanded in custody after falsely claiming to have a £3.5 million cryptocurrency stash to repay £2 million he stole.
His claim, made before sentencing on September 4, led to a court-ordered investigation, but on September 23, the judge ruled it unsubstantiated due to lack of verifiable details.
Barnes, who pleaded guilty to 39 charges including fraud, theft, and forging financial documents, also stole £206,500 from the British Motorcycle Charitable Trust.
The court deemed his false statement a serious attempt to mislead, potentially increasing his sentence.
He will be sentenced on October 3.
