UK energy suppliers must offer tariffs with lower standing charges by Jan 2025, but overall costs won’t drop.
Ofgem has confirmed plans for UK energy suppliers to offer at least one tariff with lower standing charges by end of January 2025, with the changes aimed at increasing consumer choice.
Standing charges—daily fixed fees—will be reduced on these tariffs, shifting costs to higher unit rates.
The regulator dropped proposals to eliminate standing charges entirely, citing risks to high-energy users, including those with medical needs, and will introduce minimum usage thresholds to prevent abuse by second homes or vacant properties.
The changes won’t lower overall energy costs but aim to provide more flexible payment options.
A final consultation is ongoing, with a decision expected by year-end.
The move comes ahead of a 2% energy price cap rise on October 1, increasing average annual bills to £1,755.
Officials call it a step toward greater flexibility, while consumer advocates say it’s limited and stress the need for clearer communication and deeper system reform.
