Two Rotorua women honored for volunteer work in a program providing tracking devices for people with cognitive impairments who wander.
Two Rotorua women, Elaine Fox and Gaal Ralston, have been honored with a District Commander’s Certificate of Appreciation for their dedicated service to the WanderSearch programme, a charitable initiative providing wearable tracking devices for individuals with cognitive impairments who may wander.
Their hundreds of volunteer hours supported the programme’s administration, coordination, and outreach, helping expand it to include children and making Rotorua a national leader in device adoption.
Inspired by a 2006 missing persons case, the programme has significantly reduced search times for police and search teams, offering peace of mind to families and enabling faster reunifications.
Recognized for their vital role, the women stepped down at the end of 2024 as Land Search and Rescue took over oversight.
