TransAstra gets $5M to expand its inflatable net for capturing space debris, with a test starting September 29 on the ISS.
TransAstra, a Los Angeles-based aerospace company, has secured $5 million—$2.5 million from NASA and $2.5 million in private funding—to scale its inflatable Capture Bag from 1 to 10 meters in diameter.
The system aims to capture orbital debris, defunct satellites, and potentially small asteroids for de-orbiting, recycling, or mining, helping reduce collision risks and prevent Kessler Syndrome.
A 1-meter version was delivered to the International Space Station earlier this month and is set for testing in the station’s airlock starting September 29, simulating space conditions.
The company, founded in 2015, has received multiple NASA and U.S. Space Force contracts to support sustainable space operations.
