Staffordshire police dog team honored for bravery during Tamworth riot, where dogs were injured.
A Staffordshire Police dog team, including officers Leah Smith and Ruth Jones, will receive the Police Dog Team of the Year award for their bravery during a violent riot in Tamworth on August 4, 2024, where they faced bricks, fireworks, and bottles, resulting in injuries to their dogs.
The Thin Blue Paw Awards also honored Durham’s PD Louie, a rescue dog who found a phone proving a driver was texting and speeding at 141mph in a crash that killed an infant and another woman.
Other recipients include Humberside’s Yoiko, recognized for defending his handler during a fire assault, retired Surrey dog Fiji with a Lifetime Achievement Award, Cleveland’s Dutch for saving a missing man on his first shift, Leicestershire’s Pc Leandra McCurry for resilience amid personal hardship, and Pc Marissa Barwell and her dog Ella for their crimefighting partnership.
The awards, run by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, celebrate the vital role of police dogs and their handlers across the UK.
